SUMMARY:December Book Group
DESCRIPTION:The MFL Book Club will meet on Monday\, December 1st to discuss The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende. \nA Synopsis from Goodreads:\n“In one of the most important and beloved Latin American works of the twentieth century\, Isabel Allende weaves a luminous tapestry of three generations of the Trueba family\, revealing both triumphs and tragedies. Here is patriarch Esteban\, whose wild desires and political machinations are tempered only by his love for his ethereal wife\, Clara\, a woman touched by an otherworldly hand. Their daughter\, Blanca\, whose forbidden love for a man Esteban has deemed unworthy infuriates her father\, yet will produce his greatest joy: his granddaughter Alba\, a beautiful\, ambitious girl who will lead the family and their country into a revolutionary future. \nThe House of the Spirits is an enthralling saga that spans decades and lives\, twining the personal and the political into an epic novel of love\, magic\, and fate.” \n  \nFor more information contact Deb Barry: debriverside@gmail.com

SUMMARY:"Monster in a Dress" Screening and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 5\, 3:00 pm\, filmmaker Annie Weatherwax will be holding a screening and artist talk at the Williamsville Hall\, 35 Dover Rd Williamsville\, VT. \nMonster in a Dress is semi-autobiographical story about my struggle growing up as a girl who didn’t act like one. It reimagines the relationship I had with my immigrant family and pays homage to my grandmother\, a powerful matriarch who saved me. \nA multimedia short story\, “Monster in a Dress” was created with drawings\, sound effects\, kinetic typography\, animation\, archival imagery\, and live action clips. The elements have been orchestrated not only to entertain\, but also to build empathy. For that reason\, I narrate the story myself. \nThe piece grew out of a series of character sketches that started to take on a familiar feel. It wasn’t until my fourth or fifth drawing that I realized I was drawing a version of my own extended family. (These original pencil drawings–twenty-one in all–are available to show alongside any potential screening). From these drawings\, I found music; music that told me something about the characters and how to bring their dynamics to life. \nKids are resilient\, but it’s difficult for some not to internalize the monstrous way the world sees them. I was one of those kids. If “Monster in a Dress” can ease the struggle of just one person\, it will have served its purpose. monsterinadress.com \nSponsored by the Moore Free Library

SUMMARY:Crowell Gallery October Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Karen Becker moved to Vermont in 1983 and was immediately inspired by its nature and the beauty of forms\, color and light she observed in the natural world. “It is a privilege to sit and observe nature and\, as a mere mortal\, try and capture some of nature’s endless beauty. I enjoy the portability of watercolors and delight in translating what I see.” \nBecker’s journey from receiving a BFA in Graphic Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY to Brattleboro Vermont was a natural evolution. It includes employment creating on-air-graphics and photography for Public TV in NYC\, being a typographer in advertising on Madison Avenue\, working at Rolling Stone Magazine in San Francisco and assisting with decorative murals for Diana Ross in Greenwich\, Connecticut. After moving to Vermont she joined the Vermont Arts Council as an Artist-in-Education\, working as a muralist in schools in New England. For over 20 years Becker has taught a course in her home and studio called ”No Fear Watercolors”\, Her art has been exhibited in galleries in NYC\, San Francisco\, Boston and throughout New England.
